Upcountry History Museum

The Upcountry History Museum opened in January 2007 at Heritage Green in Greenville, SC and has quickly become a popular Greenville attraction. It is the mission of the museum to promote, present and preserve the history of Upcountry South Carolina through education, research and service. The Upcountry of South Carolina is defined by 15 counties including Oconee, Pickens, Greenville, Spartanburg, Cherokee, York, Anderson, Laurens, Union, Chester, Abbeville, McCormick, Greenwood, Edgefield and Newberry. Its identity as Upcountry distinguishes the region from South Carolina's Low Country, as does its rich heritage and culture, which began as an Indian frontier and continues today as a political and economic hub identified as the Upstate. In this video, Dr. Anne Blythe, Upcountry History Museum Curator, gives viewers a glimpse of the permanent and temporary exhibits housed at the museum, including Eyes to the Hills: Travelers Rest to the Dark Corner. Viewers also meet Dean Stuart Campbell, Squire of The Dark Corner, who takes viewers on a tour of the 2,000 square foot Dark Corners exhibit. Also in this video, Museum Gift Shop and Rentals Manager Kathy Barefoot talks about the ability to rent the museum for weddings, corporate meetings and special events. The Upcountry History Museum is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm and Sunday from 1 pm until 5 pm. Tuesdays are reserved for pre-arranged group tours only.
