4th Annual Dragon Boat Upstate Festival
The 4th annual Dragon Boat Upstate Festival was held on April 17, 2010, at Portman Marina on Lake Hartwell. The Dragon Boat Festival is a fundraiser for the GHS Cancer Center, and other local non-profit organizations, through the racing of Dragon Boats. The festival is an exciting community event to benefit the Cancer Center of the Greenville Hospital System. Participants sign up to paddle a dragon boat in teams comprised of approximately 20 paddlers and 1 drummer, with captains and their teams working together to fundraise. The festival hosted more than 1,000 visitors, supporters, and team members including participants from local churches, businesses, civic groups, neighborhoods, and many other organizations. Racers, survivors, and supporters spend the day on the lake with family and friends while directly contributing to the fight against cancer. The Dragon Boat Upstate Festival provides a fun way for anyone to fundraise for cancer research while building a support system within the community. It is especially meaningful to those who are currently fighting cancer, surviving cancer, or have lost a loved one to a form of cancer. The Dragon Boat races are just one part of the competition. Awards are also given by category for Best Tent and Best Food at the event. Entertainment and other activities are also part of this wonderful festival. The event’s presenting sponsor, Harper Corporation General Contractors, and its organizing team members, GHS Cancer Center, Winn the Fight, and the SC Ovarian Cancer Foundation, along with all the teams and supporters, have done a tremendous job of raising funds this year. GHS only has $3,000 left to go before meeting its fundraising goal of $150,000 for cancer research.
