Greenville Literacy Association

The mission of the Greenville Literacy Association (GLA) is to empower adults to participate more effectively in the community by providing quality instruction in reading, writing, math, and speaking English. GLA ranks in the top 3% of the community-based adult literacy organizations in the nation both in the number of students served and the number of active volunteer tutors. For more than 44 years, GLA has offered instruction to adults in several educational programs. The Adult Basic Education and Pre-GED programs serve adults who seek to improve their basic skills and educational levels. The English as a Second Language program meets the needs of the international population by providing opportunities to improve English communication proficiency. All classes are led by volunteer tutors who attend an initial training workshop and receive ongoing program support. A variety of volunteer opportunities exist including Adult Basic Education Tutor, Pre-GED Tutor, English as a Second Language Tutor, Family Literacy Volunteer, Computer Lab Volunteer and Special Projects Volunteer. To meet the needs in Greenville County effectively, GLA offers services to adults in six fully staffed learning centers and a variety of off-site locations. GLA partners with other adult education providers in the community to offer participants a sequential plan of study. GLA hosts several events and fundraisers throughout the year to raise awareness and resources for adult literacy programs in Greenville County. The Stay at Home Tea, A Novel Event and The Really Good, Really Big, Really Cheap Book Sale are major fundraisers for the agency and represent great opportunities to support GLA. The Annual Meeting and Student-Tutor Recognition Evening, held every fall, highlights the many successes of GLA students, tutors, volunteers, and friends of literacy.
