Chautauqua Festival
CHAUTAUQUA is interactive theater presenting: "History that Just Won't Stay in a Book." Our performances take you on an astonishing journey into the past -- to laugh with Mark Twain -- to dream with Martin Luther King, Jr. -- to walk the Trail of Tears with the Cherokee -- to wonder with Rachel Carson. Step back in time when they appear on stage to talk with us, and you can talk to them. When they answer your questions, you become an "eyewitness" to History. Since 1999 Greenville Chautauqua has chosen some of the most interesting, provocative and memorable Americans to be portrayed by nationally acclaimed scholar/actors. Characters that delight us, infuriate us, dare us to think, inspire us to believe, and make us laugh. Father’s Day week in June we produce 15 FREE, family-friendly performances. Evening programs are outdoors in Falls Park or under the Chautauqua Tent at Greenville Technical College. Daytime performances are indoors at various community venues. In the video see
Hank Fincken perform under the Chautauqua Tent as Thomas Edison,
and see
Chris Lowell bring Ben Franklin to life at The Children’s Museum. You’ll hear from Production Manager Larry Bounds why Greenville Chautauqua is unlike anything you’ve experienced before, where everyone can participate and interact with their history. We aim for you to laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted -- after all, this is your story. Shuh-TALK-wa, no matter how you say it -- it’s Fun!
