Greenville County Museum of Art
The Greenville County Museum of Art lets visitors sample the best in American art through an impressive permanent collection, as well as traveling exhibitions. Located at 420 College Street on Heritage Green in downtown Greenville, South Carolina, the Greenville County Museum of Art is perhaps best known for its Andrew Wyeth Collection. The collection recently was expanded to 35 paintings with the gift of the 1946 watercolor Four Poster from textile magnate Roger Milliken, and now includes an example from every major period of Wyeth's career. The Museum's respected Southern Collection is a survey of American art from colonial times to the present, including everything from 1726 pastel portraits and Civil War vistas to paintings from the 1930s. In this video, Program Manager Anne Barr takes viewers on a tour of the museum and talks about its many offerings from art classes for pre-schoolers to gallery lectures for senior adults. Viewers see summer art camp in action and hear from participants of IGNITE, a summer arts program for rising eighth graders sponsored by the SC Governors School for the Arts and Humanities and the YMCA of Greenville. Education is a mainstay of the mission of the Greenville County Museum of Art, with gallery talks, lectures, and mini-courses offered at varying times throughout the year. The Greenville County Museum of Art opens at 11 am Tuesday through Saturday and at 1 pm on Sunday. Galleries close at 5 pm except on Thursday when they are open until 8 pm. Free Thursday evening programs include both education and entertainment, but visitors are also welcome to simply browse the collection during these extended hours. Admission to the
Greenville County Museum of Art is always free.
