Greenville News Downtown 5K Road Race And Walk

Presented each year by the Greenville SC Track Club and sponsored by The Greenville News, the Downtown 5K Road Race and Walk loops downtown Greenville with the starting and finish lines in front of the Greenville News building on South Main Street. The course has three hills with the last one testing the athletes' endurance at the end of the race. Near-perfect weather greeted almost 2,000 runners and walkers on January 24, for the 32nd annual run and walk. Overcast skies and a finish-line temperature of about 50 degrees smiled on wintertime racers of all ages. Montgomery, Alabama native Wallace Campbell took the men's crown with a time of 15 minutes, 32 seconds. A graduate of Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Campbell is a second-semester graduate student at Clemson University working on his Ph.D. in economics. The 2009 race was his first Greenville News Run Downtown. Becca Pritchard of Clemson led all female finishers with a time of 17 minutes, 18 seconds. The second-place finisher at the 2008 downtown run, Pritchard moved to the winner's circle in 2009. A longstanding Greenville event, the Greenville News Run Downtown 5K Road Race And Walk also is sponsored by BI-LO, Carolina Triathlon, Victoria Vineyards, Chick-fil-A at Cherrydale Point, Coffee Underground, Elite Physical Therapy and Runner's World.
