Fowler's Pharmacy

A Greenville, South Carolina institution, Fowler's Pharmacy on Laurens Road may be known more for its Ray-Ban's than its remedies. A family-owned, independent pharmacy since 1957 when Eugene Doc Estes was the proprietor and pharmacist, Fowlers Pharmacy continues to operate like it did in the old days, knowing their customers by name and even offering charge accounts. Today, Fowlers Pharmacy is owned by David and Judy Estes Maney and is serving its third generation of customers. Following in the footsteps of her father, Judy serves as chief pharmacist while David handles the merchandise side of the business, which includes an inventory of more than 8,000 pairs of quality, designer sunglasses. Fowlers started stocking sunglasses in 1974 when two salesmen offered Doc Estes the opportunity to be the first retail store in Greenville to sell a new product called Ray-Ban Aviators. The sunglasses were an immediate hit, so today. expanded stock includes brands such as Costa Del Mar, Smiths, Dolce & Gabbana, Native, Gucci, and Maui Jim. Viewers hear about the famous Fowlers soda fountain that was a popular high school hangout in the 1970s, and see the huge inventory of sunglasses for which Fowlers Pharmacy is known. Fowlers Pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday.
