Pleasant Ridge Camp and Retreat Center

The Pleasant Ridge Camp & Retreat Center is a recreational facility designed for youth and adults with special needs, disabilities, chronic illness, and other health conditions. Conveniently located in the foothills of South Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, this therapeutic retreat integrates accessibility into every aspect of its design and programming. The Greenville County Recreation District owns and operates the facility and the camp is supported through the generosity of the community. The Pleasant Ridge Camp & Retreat Center is home to two very special programs. The Center is the permanent home to Camp Spearhead, a program that has provided thousands of special needs children and adults with a traditional residential camp experience since 1968. The individuals who attend Camp Spearhead participate in programs ranging from archery to swimming, nature crafts to theater, and ropes courses to canoeing. Most importantly, they experience freedom, build friendships, and have tons of fun all in an atmosphere of acceptance and love. The Camp Spearhead program extends to the fall and winter seasons with weekend programs that offer day long recreational activities and respite to family members. The Pleasant Ridge Camp & Retreat Center is also the permanent home to Camp Courage, a program of the Children’s Hospital of Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center. Camp Courage provides a traditional summer camping experience for children and teens with cancer and blood disorders. While at camp, participants receive 24 hour professional medical supervision. Campers are free to laugh, play, grow and explore in a normal, developmentally appropriate way. Trained counselors and volunteers help nurture the campers’ self-esteem while providing therapeutic opportunities for individual development. The Pleasant Ridge Camp & Retreat Center is open for public use from September through May. Visitors will find an inviting, modern design with a resort look and an atmosphere conducive to corporate retreats, church functions, civic events, family gatherings, and weddings.
