Greenville, South Carolina is home to numerous technology and software development companies including Infor (formerly Datastream), Ahold Information Services and ScanSource. Greenville also boasts the Greenville Hospital System/Clemson University Biomedical Cooperative, an initiative that links Clemson University's expertise in biomedical research with the clinical expertise of the hospital system. The Biomedical Cooperative advances clinical and biomedical sciences and fosters the application of that knowledge to the practice of medicine. Research teams include laboratories for Medicinal Chemistry, Molecular Endocrinology, Vascular Research, Tumor Biology and Human Pathology.

Clemson University also has formed a partnership with BMW Manufacturing Co. and the state of South Carolina to establish a premiere automotive / motor sport research center in Greenville. The Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) is located on a 250-acre campus along Interstate 85. CU-ICAR will house the Clemson University Graduate Engineering Center, offering training and advanced degrees in automotive engineering and motor sport technology.

Greenville's General Electric plant is meeting new global technology needs by retooling to manufacture wind power generators. Traditionally a gas turbine maker, GE now makes fifty percent of the wind turbines manufactured in the United States.

In addition to large manufacturers, there are many startup companies and small businesses in Greenville working to change the world. For example, Invenca is an emerging advanced materials company focused on innovations in separation science, and Innegrity is a high performance fiber manufacturer focusing on the composites industry.
