Zan Wells the artist and sculptor, best known for the Mice on Main sculptures that dot the sidewalks of downtown Greenville, SC, has completed more than 30 commissioned sculptures throughout South Carolina. The mice now appear on T-shirts and postcards, and even in a new children’s book written by Linda Kelly and illustrated by Zan. Zan’s love for art began at an early age, but she did not began sculpting professionally until the age of 55. Her local works include a bronze statue of Joel Poinsett, which is mounted in the Court Street area of downtown at the site of an historic speech made by Poinsett on behalf of preserving the Union on July 4, 1851. Another of her works, Dr. Charles Townes, the Greenville native who invented the laser, sits across from the entrance to Falls Park, and Romeo and Juliet can be found at The Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. In this video, viewers go inside the north Greenville studio of Zan Wells to see works in progress including busts of her grandchildren.
