Proterra, a leading designer and manufacturer of advanced energy storage systems, will soon call Greenville, South Carolina home. The Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research –CU-ICAR-has been chosen as the site that will bring this revolutionary transportation company to Greenville, South Carolina. An innovator of clean commercial transit solutions, Proterra has essentially redesigned the transportation industry by combining innovation and imagination to produce the first “zero emission, fast-charge, battery-electric bus”. These buses will have a significant impact on communities by reducing noise and air pollution, and cutting down vehicle operating costs. This benefits not only the environment, but can potentially break our nation’s dependency on foreign fuel. The decision to locate Proterra’s first full scale manufacturing company at CU-ICAR in Greenville, SC, will have a huge impact on the local economy. CU-ICAR is an automotive research campus situated on over 250 acres of land in Greenville, SC. Proterra plans to lease 25 acres from CU-ICAR to build its 240,000 square foot facility, with the potential of expanding to an even larger site. Construction of the Proterra site is scheduled to begin in spring 2010 and expected to open in 2011.
